Geared to both the general public and members of the press, the MDG Monitor needed to appeal to a vast international audience. Add to that a very tight deadline. We developed an organized information architecture and designed a website incorporating their existing logo and icons. We programmed the website with up-to-the-minute newsfeeds, statistics and data as well as an interactive flash map. On November 1, Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, along with representatives from Google and Cisco, launched the website at a UN press conference. We are honored to have been a part of this monumental and important project!

Last spring we were presented with the challenge of bringing an e-Learning website up to date. The existing website was a bit difficult to navigate and had gads of out of date and boring stock photos. As many of you have heard me rant about before, I hate stock photography (most of the time). Especially the cheap, royalty free type. Its too generic, over-used, and impersonal. Additionally, if your stock imagery includes photos of people or technology, they can quickly look out of date. This was the case with Enterprise Training. Their stock photos had women in out of date clothing and men pointing at giant boxy computer screen (the kind you only see on curbsides).

Our challenge was to create simple custom graphics and avoid photography. Amanda worked her design magic and we went from this:

to This:

The biggest problem on the interior pages was that there were so many pages with sub-menus. The navigation was not consistent throughout the site. It was easy for a visitor to get lost. We solved this problem by creating three distinct navigation levels. The main navigation along top remains the same on every page. There is a sub-menu on the left side of internal pages. This applies to the particular page a visitor is on. The icons help visitors quickly identify the main areas of the website.

As you can see, we conceded to minimal use of stock photography, but kept it more relevant to the page it was on and bit bit more neutral. I promise you will not see any Dorothy Hamill haircuts or first generation PCs.

Visit the site and see the changes for yourself: Enterprise Training.

Brooklyn-based visual artist Martha Walker came to 15 minutes media looking to streamline her website in both aesthetic and marketing contexts. After reviewing her website, we developed a plan within her budget to clean up her code using the latest CSS and web compliant technology as well as increase usability in navigation, SEO marketing, and the visual appeal of features such as the navigation and gallery. Martha's original site had been created by converting Microsoft Word documents into HTML (a big no-no) and the code was very buggy and heavy. This made the pages take a long time to download and search engines had trouble spidering her website. Additionally, many of the images displayed on the site were very large files, increasing download time and requiring viewers to scroll to view the entire image. The Old Martha Walker Homepage and Gallery page, respectively:

Without dramatically changing the overall design, we were able to clean up the code and make the site more visibly appealing. We added content to the homepage to draw visitors in immediately. By putting up current content, visitors can see that the site is up to date and instantly be aware of new shows and exhibits. We left aligned the fonts and made them sans-serif, making the text easier to read. We also fixed the width of the layout.

Next we tackled the gallery. We created thumbnails of each sculpture. Since Martha has photos of each piece from several angles, we created a secondary detail page so that more information about each item could be displayed.

The New Martha Walker Homepage and Gallery page, respectively:

We added a feature that allows users to blow up the image by clicking on the thumbnail. This is an advantage because it reduces the number of clicks and pages for website visitors. Check it out for yourself: http://marthawalker.net/gallery_passion.html. An example of this enlarge is as follows:

Martha Walker's Official Website relaunch arrives just in time for her very busy summer/fall season including work in the 440 Gallery's Small Works Show, Residency at the Vermont Studio Center, and her upcoming Solo Exhibition, Undercurrents, at 440 Gallery. The press releases for each of the aforementioned are conveniently located on her brand new events page.

With just a few simple changes, your website usability and visibility can be improved.

Until I moved to NY almost a year ago, I'd always taken owning a car for granted. I could run several errands, visit a few friends, pick up some groceries, all within the span of just a few hours. Needless to say, I didn't bring that car with me. And as I've discovered, although New York's public transportation is incredible (even if it's also frustrating) there is no way I could accomplish all the above tasks in anything less than a whole day. It simply takes too long to get around the city.

And buying furniture? That's a whole other story. How in the world do I get a dresser from mid-town to brooklyn? If I find a cab that can accommodate it (perhaps one of those SUV cabs) I have to deal with the annoyed cab driver when he finds out I live in Brooklyn and am hauling this large piece of furniture that barely squeezes into the back seat.
Well, here at 15 minutes media, we've recently acquired a new client who can at least alleviate that last frustration. Kevin's Van Service is literally a guy with a van. He'll pick up your things and drive them where they need to go. And you don't even need to be there! He provides one of those New York necessities, when buying and/or transporting large items can be such a pain. It's the little things that count. And trust me, we've used his services ourselves. How do you think we got these fancy new chairs in the office?

His primary mode of advertisement (until he found us...or did we find him?) was craigslist.org. He is now venturing into the world of websites. And I was approached to do some sort of graphic for him, featuring a van. (He wanted clip-art...that's almost always a no-no. But I won't go into that here. There'll be time for that later.)

Below I've included images from first sketch to final graphic.

Here's the sketch on paper:

Image gets cleaned up a bit in photoshop:

Image gets smoother and colorful in Illustrator:

I wanted to work with a fun background to add interest and depth.

However, I felt the black was a bit too intense (and not quite so friendly) We all know that when you hire a guy to drive your stuff around in a van...you want to be able to trust him. The black just screamed "dark alley" to me. It had to go. So, I decided on blue, added a quirky font and fun tag-line (to further enhance the trust level).

And...voila:

Look for Kevin's Van Service new website soon at www.kevinsvanservice.com

We are excited to announce the completion of an identity update for client, C.I. Visions, Inc.

Challenge: Update existing identity - bring it into the 21st century

Inspiration: Friendly, bright, outgoing

Designer: Amanda

Previous Identity

Final Updated Logo applied to new business cards

In an effort to update the logo for C.I. Visions, Inc, the client decided to break away from the yellow triangular light emanating from the "O" of her previous logo. We decided to go with an icon that contained more symbolic meaning for her and the company. After settling on a spiral (enlightenment, life, growth, evolution, spirituality, etc...) it was a matter of rendering the new icon in a visually pleasing and interesting way. This is how the circles came about. they help to create a sense of movement and growth, further emphasizing the intended meaning.

We also chose a sans serif font (Neutra Text) that resembles a more updated version of the previous font.
Still to come: letterhead, folders, stickers, bags, oh my!
